About Artist Quirk
Artist Quirk is for the self-taught and returning hobbyist who paints and sketches on evenings and weekends, buys their own materials, and just wants to know what actually works. You don't need a studio, a degree, or a favorite brand to argue about - you need to know whether that student watercolor set is good enough, which sketchbook won't buckle under a wet wash, and if gouache or acrylic is the better place to put your next twenty dollars.
We cover supplies by medium: sketching pencils, pens and sketchbooks; student versus artist-grade watercolors; gouache and acrylic; colored pencils; ink and markers; lino, gelli and block printing kits; and the paper that holds it all. Every review names specific products, lays out the trade-offs plainly, and tells you who each one is for - because the cheap option is sometimes the right one and sometimes a waste, and we'll say which. We don't run a test bench: every figure comes from the maker's published specs or a named source, and we say where each one came from. Comparison tables and product cards show up where they help you choose, not to pad the page.
Most posts come with a short weekend project that uses the gear we recommend, so a purchase turns into something you actually made by Sunday night. We revisit seasonal gift guides and 'what's worth it' roundups. No brand loyalty, no forum shouting - just sorted, usable answers from people who paint for the fun of it.
